3 Keys to a West Virginia Victory in the Backyard Brawl
2. Greene needs to be "Green"
Green is often used as a slang term for money, and WVU quarterback Garrett Greene has to be “money” in the Backyard Brawl for WVU to pick up the win. Becoming the starting quarterback last season, Greene has some impressive performances under his belt, and it may very well take another one on Saturday. Whether through the air or with his legs, Greene has to leave an impact on this game. Head Coach Neal Brown referred to Greene’s performance last Saturday against Albany as “the best at the fundamentals he has been.”
After struggling against Penn State, Greene gets another opportunity against a Power 4 opponent in the non-conference. One sub-point in this conversation is how much help Greene will get from his wide receivers. In the small sample size this season, no wideout has been all that impressive. 3 players (Hudson Clement, Kole Taylor, and Traylon Ray) have just over 70 receiving yards on the season and the leading pass catcher is Traylon Ray with just 7 receptions. In theory, the “ask” is very simple. Greene needs his guys to get open, catch the football, and make plays in the open field. For Greene to be “money” on Saturday, he’ll need a little help from his friends.
