It was about as incredible a moment as West Virginia outfielder Paul Schoenfeld could have hoped for.

The Mountaineers were hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2019, and WVU needed a win to stave off elimination from the tournament in their second game of the day on Sunday night. It was the ninth inning, when Paul Schoenfeld stepped up to a plate. And after a Kentucky balk tied the game at 9-9 following two earlier runs in the top of the ninth, Schoenfeld would blast a homer out of Kendrick Family Ballpark to drive home two runs and give the Mountaineers an 11-9 lead.

The Wildcats would not be able to mount a comeback of their own, and while the Mountaineers still must win one more game on Monday, their season is still alive and it was an all-time great moment in West Virginia sports history.

After the game, Schoenfeld struggled to put the moment in words as the SEC Network broadcasters interviewed him: "I'm blacked out right now, this is crazy. Look at our fans." Those were his words as the Mountaineers were serenaded by fans with "Take Me Home, Country Roads." But after the game, Schoenfeld was asked where the moment ranked in his five seasons of collegiate baseball, and he made it clear that no moment has been sweeter.

“That’s one of one," Schoenfeld said.

Now, the Mountaineers will need one more big effort on Monday night. But regardless of how the final game plays out, Schoenfeld's Sunday night heroics will go down in program history among the most electric moments ever seen.
