No. 22 West Virginia wrestling looked to have a rivalry win in hand at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Sunday, but a late-match rally saw Pitt reel off four straight victories to end the competition and walk out of hostile territory as the winners of the Backyard Brawl.
The Mountaineers led 17-9 through 6-of-10 individual matches, but the four consecutive victories to close the action was enough for Pitt to rally for a 25-17 win. WVU (7-3) loses their second consecutive ranked matchup with the defeat.
West Virginia's Peyton Hall, currently ranked No. 3 nationally in the 165-pound weight class, stayed undefeated on the season, moving to 20-0 overall. The victory also moves Hall into a tie for second all-time in WVU program history with 120 total wins.
2,220 fans turned out to the Coliseum for the rivalry match, setting the record for the fifth-largest crowd in program history.
