No. 12 WVU suffers heartbreaking 78-73 loss to No. 5 Texas in Gulf Coast Showcase
By Joseph Smith
For the first time in over a decade, West Virginia and Texas are no longer conference opponents. But the two teams still met in women's basketball on Sunday night with a lot on the line.
The No. 5 Longhorns and No. 12 Mountaineers found themselves in the championship contest at the 2024 Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida this weekend, with both teams entering the clash undefeated. When the dust settled in a game riddled with fouls -- the two teams combined for 54 fouls and shot a combined 56 free throws -- it was Texas (7-0) who maintained their perfect record as West Virginia (8-1) fell 78-73.
The game came down to the wire -- the Mountaineers had one final possession as time winded down in regulation to attempt a game-tying three-point shot but lost control of the ball, the most costly of their 20 team turnovers.
The biggest difference make for the Longhorns proved WVU's costly fouls -- four players for WVU finished with four or more fouls -- and their tenacious effort on the boards. Texas outrebounded WVU 37-23 overall and 18-5 on offense, and converted those offensive boards to outscore WVU 26-6 in second chance points.
The Mountaineers were lead by JJ Quinerly with 29 points ad Jordan Harrison with 20 points.
WVU returns to action this coming Friday at the WVU Coliseum against East Tennessee State, with tip-off set for 10:30 AM EST.
