Is it safe to say that the honeymoon period in Morgantown is over?

WVU football moved to 2-3 on the 2025 season Saturday with an absolutely ugly 48-14 loss to the Utah Utes which keeps the Mountaineers winless in Big 12 play. Fans who had previously celebrated the return of head coach Rich Rodriguez are now already seeming to sour on the return of WVU's prodigal son.

Of course, that may not be fair, given that the program is just five games into his first season back at the school, with a team made up of over 80 new players. But college football fans don't always bring nuance and rational thought to a discussion, particularly when they just saw their favorite team get beat by five touchdowns on a Saturday evening.

"Fire Rich Rod" chants rang out through the stadium at one point during the brutal affair, and some fans on social media are also already calling for Rodriguez to get the pink slip. Others took the time to point out that Utah is actually a pretty good opponent, while some are just a little bit worried about player retention after such a tough season. After all, Rodriguez doesn't want to end up in the same spot next season.

Some fans pointed out that it's not neccesarily a hot take to believe that Neal Brown's WVU teams would have been able to handle the team Rodriguez – who took over Brown's job after he was fired – has put onto the field through the first portion of the season. Many just wallowed in their disappointment, albeit while providing some humorous screenshots of Rodriguez to describe how the game felt.
