Mike Hawkins Jr. etches his name into West Virginia's record book with Virginia win

The West Virginia Mountaineersshocked the college football worldby upsetting No. 25 Virginia as double-digit underdogs during the Duke's Mayo Classic on Saturday night. And they could not have gotten it done without starting quarterback Mike Hawkins Jr. turning Bank of America Stadium into his own personal playground.

Hawkins Jr. played an exceptional game against the Cavaliers, clearly standing out as the most talented player on the field. The Mountaineers knocked off the Cavaliers 38-27, and all five offensive touchdowns scored by West Virginia came via Hawkins Jr. during the game. He put up over 300 all-purpose yards, and in doing so, he made joined some rarefied air in the West Virginia record books, as he accomplished something few WVU quarterbacks before him have.

Hawkins Jr. went 10-for-17 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 123 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. With those touchdown numbers in particular, the rising young gunslinger became the first West Virginia player since Pat White in 2008 to have three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdownsin a single game.

He's also just the third player in West Virginia history to achieve that accomplishment – with the only other examples of it happening in program history dating back to Ira Rodgers, who pulled it off in 1915 and 1919.

Rich Rodriguez called Hawkins Jr.'s performance "electric"after the game,and it's hard to disagree with that assessment. And it's starting to look like West Virginia might have their best quarterback since at least Will Grier leading their team this season – maybe even their best quarterback since Pat White.
