Mark Kellogg looks to make major recruiting splash for WVU with elite 4-star target

The West Virginia women's basketball team hasspent the past few seasonsbuilding into a consistent, legitimate Big 12 and NCAA Tournament contender. And with the 2026-2027 campaign looming on the horizon, head coach Mark Kellogg is still working hard to build a top roster for future seasons.

Talia Goodman at On3 reported on Monday that highly-touted Class of 2027 recruit Zya Small hasscheduled visitswith both Georgia Tech and West Virginia, seemingly indicating that the Mountaineers are in serious contention for the rising 6-foot-1 power forward.

247Sports' composite recruiting rankings has Smalllisted as a 4-star prospect, and the 37th-best player nationally in her recruiting class. She's also ranked as the eighth-best power forward and the third-best player in Pennsylvania in the 2027 class.

The Mountaineers haven't historically been in play for the top recruiting targets nationally, but as the program continues to turn in strong performances that propel them into the national spotlight, Kellogg will need to go after more top-caliber prospects to keep expanding upon the success he's already had in Morgantown.

And as the program continues to excel and college sports moves deeper into the revenue sharing era, it's likely that more money will be available for Kellogg to work with. And that should give the Mountaineers a better chance at landing players like small.

Kellogg has already proven to be a relatively impactful recruiter in the transfer portal, but has had the benefit of not having to truly prove himself yet as a high school recruiter. But if his portal work this past offseason is any indication, he can attract a team full of top-level talent to Morgantown – and the Mountaineers may be able to snag their biggest prospect yet in Small.
