Kansas LB Trey Lathan Trolls WVU Football After Jayhawks Beat Mountaineers

One player on the Kansas defense that WVU football fans probably recognized well this past week was Trey Lathan, who transferred to the Jayhawks after a stint under Neal Brown in Morgantown once Rich Rodriguez took over the Mountaineers this past offseason.

Lathan had a pretty impressive performance against the Mountaineers, racking up multiple tackles to maintain his spot as the leading tackler this season for Kansas – including tallying a massive sack in the second half. Lathan also intercepted his former quarterback Nicco Marchiol in the third quarter of action and returned the ball for over 30 yards.

A former Mountaineer who left Rodriguez behind pulling that off seemed like adding insult on top of the injury that was a 41-10 blowout loss for the Mountaineers, but Lathan went ahead and added an actual insult or two by throwing shade at his former team following the game – and also adding that he was easily able to predict where Marchiol was going to throw the pass which he intercepted.

"Those guys were blowing me up all week, so it felt good to put a dub to them. I wish them the best, though. My first pick...I envisioned it all week," Lathan said.

"I knew he was going to throw one on the hash, and I just thank God I was there. I know he likes to throw on the hash. I told (my teammates) I was going to pretend like I wasn't there and then run as soon as he takes his hand off the ball. He does that a lot. He predetermines who he's going to a lot."

Lathan also added a post to his account on X, formerly known as Twitter, with a picture of him running back his interception and celebrating with the caption "Came a long way from Tampa 2." This serves as a reference to a specific game against Arizona last season, where Lathan was burned by Arizona receivers on deep routes in pass coverage due to then-defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley calling Tampa 2 coverage, which Brown at the time referred to as "not good defense."

Lathan's trolling of his former team probably stings for most fans – and his analysis of Marchiol in the passing game should add even more concern for WVU as they continue to evaluate their quarterback situation – and maybe Rodriguez should have made a stronger push to keep him on the roster. That being said, Lathan seems to have found a perfect fit at his new home.
