Sources tell FootballScoop that Jeff Casteel, who most famously served as defensive coordinator at West Virginia under Rich Rodriguez in the 2000’s, will be returning to join Rodriguez’s staff in Morgantown. Exactly what position he’ll fill on the staff is still undisclosed.

Casteel served under Rodrigue, Bill Stewart, and Dana Holgorsen for the Mountaineers from 2001-2011, first serving as a position coach before spending the next decade as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Casteel’s defense led WVUt o six Big East Conference championships and produced four All-Americans and nine all-conference honorees. The Mountaineers also finished the season with a Top 15 defense nationally during three of his ten seasons in the position -- they were No. 3 in total defense in 2010, No. 7 in 2007 and No. 15 in 2005.

Casteel also coached with Rodriguez as his defensive coordinator at Arizona from 2012-2016, helming a defense which helped earn the Wildcats the 2014 Pac-12 South divisional championship and secured Arizona four bowl game appearances, including a trip to the 2014 Fiesta Bowl.

Casteel most recently served as a defensive analyst for WVU during the Neal Brown tenure, but was not on staff during the 2024 season.
