On Wednesday, the college basketball world learned some unfortunate news about the current health situation of legendary former West Virginia men's basketball coach Bob Huggins.

A press release was issued by the Huggins family on Wednesday in coordination with the Cincinnati Athletics Department sharing an update on a recent change in his health condition.

"Bob is living with a progressive cognitive condition that has begun to affect his memory, and aspects of his daily life," read the statement. "While [his] family has chosen to keep this information private over the past several months, they believe this is an appropriate time to share the news with the many people who have supported Bob throughout his remarkable career."

Bob Huggins’ family has released a statement.

West Virginia should honor Bob Huggins while there is still time left

Listen, Huggins made some mistakes at the end of his career. Significant mistakes that should not be excused, and that anyone should be held accountable for. Neither homophobic slurs or drunk driving are acceptable behavior. But he did end up being held accountable, losing his job due to his mistakes.

And while his departure was a bit acrimonious, that doesn't erase how important he was to the program for nearly two decades. His cocaching led the Mountaineers to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, including five trips to the Sweet 16 and one trip to the Final Four. He kept the program not only relevant, but a national contender for most of his tenure.

And while plenty of people had hoped that Huggins would reconcile with the school on his own terms, and that the school would make something happen to honor his legacy when that moment came. But now, it appears that Huggins might be in worse health than we all would have guessed him to be. And while there is still time left to do so, he deserves to have his contributions to the program recognized.

Akron recognized Huggins for his contributions to their program last season while he was in attendance, and he will soon be inducted into Cincinnati's Hall of Fame. But his alma mater, the flagship university for his native state in the ity he was born, still has not acknowledged him since hi admittedly messy departure. Now, it feels like it might be time to make that happen.
