Gavin Kelly made his debut this weekend for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team during the World Collegiate Baseball Championship, and he immediately made an impact – as well as a little bit of history.
The US national team opened up competition at the event against Chinese Taipei, and Kelly found himself in the starting lineup as the designated hitter. And he certainly lived up to every expectation his coaching staff could have for him in the role, and then some.
Gavin Kelly's big day propels the US Collegiate National Team to victory.
Kelly went 5-for-6 at the plate in a 10-6 victory for the US national team, tallying four RBI and scoring three runs of his own – which helped account for 70 percent of the team's massive scoring output in the victory.
With the performance, Kelly etched his name into the Collegiate National Team history books in a couple of different ways. He managed to tie the program's single-game hit record with his five hits, which also marked the first five-hit game from a player on the team since 2019. He also became just the 11th player in program history to record a five-hit outing.

It's just another example of why Kelly is considered among the top 2027 MLB Draft prospects at the collegiate level, and why there are such high expectations on him as he returns to anchor the Mountaineers in 2027 after helping lead them to their first-ever College World Series appearance this past spring.
It will be exciting to watch what comes next for Kelly, both at this week's world championship competition as well as in the future for West Virginia baseball.
