During his collegaite career with the West Virginia Mountaineers, Mike Gansey was an absolute star on the hardwood. Now, he's similarly climbing the ranks behind the scenes now that his playing dyas are long behind him.
Earlier this week, Gansey was hired by the Philadelphia 76ers as their president of basketball operations, securing the top executive title for the organization. Gansey will leave his post as general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers to take the new position.
Mike Gansey named 76ers President of Basketball Operations
Gansey first joined the Cavaliers' organization in 2012, joining the front office of their G-League affiliate. He slowly climbed the ranks to general manager of the Charge before being hired as the assistant general manager for the Cavaliers in 2017. In 2022, he was then promoted again to serve as the team's general manager. Gansey was instrumental in helping piece together a Cavaliers' roster that made a run to the Eastern Conference Finals this season.
The search to hire Gansey was led by Bob Myers, a four-time NBA champion in the front office of the Golden State Warriors and multi-time NBA Executive of the Year. Myers currently serves as president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, who was brought in to lead the search. He will continue to work closely with Gansey and "assist in his vision for the organization."
Gansey also excelled as a player for the Mountaineers, playing with West Virginia from 2003-2006. He led the Mountaineers to the Elite 8 as a senior, and was named Gansey was named First-Team All Big-East, and an Honorable Mention All-American. He also was named a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Award, the Wooden Award, and the Naismith Trophy.
