Former West Virginia star commits to regional rival amid eligibility chaos

For awhile, it appeared that a return to Morgantown may be in the works for one former West Virginia player seeking an additional year of eligibility. But now, with an injunction officially granted awarding him the extra year, it appears he'll be headed to a different team – and one that WVU fans know well.

Jordan Scruggs, who joined the Mountaineers last offseason and spent one year with the program, was reportedlygranted an additional year of eligibilityon Monday, and will be transferring to Maryland to use it. Scruggs does not need to enter the portal, as he already entered his name during the established portal period in anticipation of such a ruling.

The news came out a few weeks ago that Scruggs wasseeking another year of eligibilityvia a court ruling, and within the next week there was an initial report that Scruggshad been granted an additional year of eligibility.

At the time, it seemed that a return from Scruggs would involve him playing another season for West Virginia. But with Rich Rodriguez initially putting a pause on adding any players seeking extra eligibility before adding cornerback Jason Chambers within the past week.

Now, not only will he not be back in Morgantown, but he will be playing for one of the school's biggest historical rivals in the Maryland Terrapins. But if there wasn't room for Scruggs to be added when he knew he'd be available, he can't be blamed for seeking out a team that had a spot to offer.

But with one injunction granting eligibility to fifth-year athletesstayed on Saturday, it's hard to tell if any of these athletes getting granted eligibility will make it onto the field. So for now, Scruggs is set to suit up for the Terrapins this fall – but that could also change in the coming weeks.
