West Virginia women's basketball has the chance to bring one of the top in-state players in recent history home for her final collegiate season.

Marley Washenitz, a Fairmont, W.Va-native and graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, announced on Thursday that she would be entering the transfer portal to find a new home for her final season of collegiate eligibility.

The standout guard originally committed to West Virginia under former Head Coach Mike Carey, but lost her roster spot due to rule complications following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washenitz chose to re-open her recruitment and ended up with the biggest rival of the team she originally committed to, joining the Pittsburgh Panthers. Over the past three seasons, Washenitz has appeared started 78 games and appeared in 91 games for the Panthers -- she averaged 9.3 points and 2.6 assists per game last season.

Washenitz was a two-time West Virginia State Player of the Year and four-time West Virginia All-State First Team selection in high school. As a high school senior, she posted a stat line that looked fresh out of a video game -- she averaged 29.2 points, 11 rebounds, 7.7 steals, and 5 assists per game. She would end her high school career with a total of 2,000 points, 781 rebounds, 512 steals and 464 assists.

Given her original commitment to the old-gold-and-blue, it is likely Washenitz always harbored the desire to suit up for her home state and take the court at the WVU Coliseum -- now, with the WVU women's basketball program in as good of shape as ever under the direction of Head Coach Mark Kellogg, it's as good of a time as every for her to make the move.
