Nothing lasts forever, and it appears that the goodwill some WVU football fans had for the return of Rich Rodriguez is quickly running out.
The West Virginia Mountaineers dropped their fourth consecutive game on Saturday to fall to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in Big 12 play, losing to the UCF Knights in a 45-13 beating that gave little hope for Mountaineer fans that anything could be salvaged from this season.
The Mountaineers gave up 7.7 yards per play against UCF while averaging just 2.7 yards per play themselves and were outgained by 368 yards in the loss to the Knights. West Virginia has now been outscored 172-61 in conference play this season.
WVU fans and college football media alike reacted to the Mountaineers' devastating loss to UCF, and the consensus was the same among most people β this is a historically bad edition of the WVU football program, and the honeymoon period is over for Rodriguez.
Some people were already calling for Rodriguez's job on Saturday, as one fan called him a "con man" and another said he "never" should have been brought back to the program. While others didn't go quite that far, the chorus of disappointment and frustration with the current WVU team was loud and in unison from folks following the team after the loss.
While it's unlikely Rodriguez loses his job, at least not this year, WVU fans have fully accepted they're in a bad situation and are upset with the product being placed on the field now over halfway through the season. Check out some of the reactions to the WVU loss below, and let us know how you're feeling about the game.
And to think this was a winnable gameπππ

This is the worst WVU team in my lifetime

The 3-8 2001 team beats these guys by 2 TDs at least.

Rich Rodriguez should not be allowed to even take the flight home on the dime of the West Virginia tax payers. He is a con man. Fire him.

The Rich Rod honeymoon part 2 is officially over. They are baaaaaad. When you look at the remaining schedule, West Virginia seems headed for 2-10.

Never should have brought @RealCoachRod back! Shot his wad in the Backyard Brawl, and it'll be more of the same next season.

Rich Rod 2.0 has been a disaster so far.

People are still blaming Neal brown lol Neal brown would be bowl eligible with this schedule
β Deuce McBride Enthusiast (@deuce_enthused) October 18, 2025
Definitely one of the top 2 or 3 worst teams in WVU football history.
β Gold And Blue Zone (@GoldAndBlueZone) October 18, 2025
Can probably count the number of guys on this team who should be P4 players on one hand.
Letβs go Mountaineers pic.twitter.com/jX93BXlO5t

Football team there is nothing to think about until January in the portal. Team lacks talent and speed.

If Rich Rod says he has 5 Quarterbacks, how many Quarterbacks does Rich Rod have?
Simply an embarrassing and quite telling result for WVU coming out of the bye week and playing at the team they theoretically had the best opportunity to get a win in the 2nd half of the season.
β JayBirdLewis (@WestBGVirginian) October 18, 2025
Mountaineers trail late in the 4th at UCF 45-7.
I never turn off a game or leave games early, but I did not finish watching this game. I genuinely cannot watch. Thatβs not even me being dramatic or just talking for the sake of talking, it is actually painful to watch this team.
β The Coal Country Podcast (@coalcountrywvu) October 18, 2025
i do think that injuries played a big role in turning wvu from, like, a regular bad team into a truly heinous one but man just trotting out these same five offensive linemen over and over and over is truly insane

Mike Golic Jr. is talking about The Life of a Showgirl and his Swiftie fandom during the fourth quarter of a WVU football broadcast. This team is cooked.
β Joe Smith (@joesmithwrites) October 18, 2025
I have a very strong feeling that we will not recognize much of this team on next yearβs roster.

Scotty Fox dropping the snap for a 20 yard loss is the last straw for me. SMH
β Ben Booth (@TheBenBoothShow) October 18, 2025
program needed ripped down to the studs even if this doesn't work. there was always a big chance this season was going to look like this and if there's no improvement next year you're able to get out of this contract much easier.
