One of the more prominent national college basketball analysts in the sport seemed to indicate on Tuesday evening that West Virginia basketball will need to find a new head coach. While no official news has been broken by either program yet, this signals we may be close to WVU Head Coach Darian DeVries accepting an offer from Indiana.
ESPN college basketball insider and former Division 1 head coach Fran Fraschilla -- who covers Big 12 basketball for the outlet -- sent out a tweet on Twitter/X on Tuesday evening that WVU is a “sleeping giant” that “will get a great coach.”
If you have not been to the state of West Virginia, trust me, @WVUhoops is a sleeping giant. They will get a great coach. @Big12Conference

While no news has officially come on this front, Fraschilla indicating the Mountaineers need a new head coach is a very bad sign for WVU fans. He has followed the program closely, particularly in the past season, and is likely tied into sources at the national level who would be among the first to know the news for certain.
Fraschilla is a veteran, and not the type of reporter to let such information slip without relative confidence in what’s coming next.
The latest news out of Indiana had indicated the administration was keeping the search “locked down” and that a coach had “likely” been selected but the school was staying silent.
If the news does become official soon, WVU will have to embark on their second coaching search in a major revenue sport in six months following the termination of football coach Neal Brown and hiring of Rich Rodriguez for the role in December.
It will also lead to the Mountaineers having their fourth different head basketball coach in four consecutive seasons -- Bob Huggins, Josh Eilert, and DeVries have each been at the helm since the 2022-2023 season.
