Another WVU football defender seeking another year of eligibility

While the West Virginia Mountaineers are set to get back onto the field for fall camp next week, fans of the program will also want to keep their eyes on the court room. That's because there could be some reinforcements coming the team this fall.

It was reported earlier this week that the Mountaineers could get a boost from a returning cornerback in Jordan Scruggs, who saw his eligibility run out last season and is awaiting a court decision on a temporary restraining order next week to allow him to play. Now, another former West Virginia star is looking earn another year of eligibility as well.

Eddie Kelly Jr. seeks another year of eligibility for WVU football

This time, the player is question is defensive lineman Eddie Kelly Jr., who joined the Mountaineers last fall and made a significant impact during the season. Now, he's hoping to return to WVU for one more season.

Unlike Scruggs, Kelly has a bit more of a solid case for another year. He is one of those athletes from the 2022 recruiting class who played four seasons in four years. The NCAA made the move this summer to expand to a five seasons in five years model, but decided to exclude athletes graduating last year from receiving an additional year of eligibility.

Many other athletes in a similar situation have already been granted an injunction, paving the way for more athletes such as Kelly to be granted an additional year. Kelly played at USF in 2022, Georgia Tech in 2023, and Missouri in 2024 before spending last year with the Mountaineers.

Kelly played in all 12 games and made four starts last season, finishing the year with 26 tackles, and three pass breakups. And with so much of the defensive line rotation this year set to rely on JUCO signings, Kelly's experience in both Alley's system and at the Power 4 level would be a welcome re-addition entering the season.
