Adam Schefter: WVU football alum Anthony Becht interviewed for open head coach spot

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, former West Virginia football tight end and current head coach of the UFL's St. Louis Battlehawks, Anthony Becht, has interviewed for the West Virginia head coach opening.



Becht played under head coach Don Nehlen at WVU from 1995-1999, finishing his career with 83 catches for 1,173 yards, and 10 touchdowns. He was an honorable mention All-American selection his senior season., and was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

Becht spent 11 years in the NFL, playing for five different teams (New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs) and racking up 183 receptions for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Becht has coached the St. Louis Battlehawks for the past two seasons, leading the team to a 14-6 record during his stint. The Battlehawks advanced to the XFL Conference Championship game in 2024 before bowing out of the postseason before advancing to the UFL Championship.

Becht's son, Rocco, is currently the starting quarterback at Iowa State. He went 249-of-420 passing (59.3%) for 3,235 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. The Cyclone finished 10-3 this past season (including a 28-16 win over the Mountaineers), losing to Arizona State in the Big 12 Championship and earning a trip to the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Rocco Becht currently has two seasons of eligibility left.
