WVU Football: Sam James Wins Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
By Matt Waskey
On Saturday, WVU redshirt freshman Sam James showed why he deserved to be praised by WVU Football Coach Neal Brown on a consistent basis.
To top off a weekend that shocked almost everyone who loves everything WVU football, Sam James being named the Newcomer of the Week in the Big 12 was probably he least shocking.
The Richmond Hill, Georgia native racked up 212 yards of total offense in his third career game for the Mountaineers.
James, who received consistent praise from Head Coach Neal Brown, seemingly from the opening of camp, had his biggest day as a Mountaineer and set the stage for things to come.
Sam James was on the receiving end of quarterback Austin Kendall’s first touchdown of the day, ending a 66-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown catch. He also had his longest catch thus far, a 51-yard pass from Kendall. He added seven more catches for 85 yards, one rush for seven yards and returned three kicks for a combined 50 yards, bringing his total to 212 yards of total offense.
The Mountaineers and James will look to keep the momentum going with a visit to Lawrence, Kansas to take on Les Miles and the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday at 4:30pm.
