The WVU baseball team couldn’t figure out Texas Tech on Friday like it did the day before. The Red Raiders showed why they could be the top team in the Big 12 Conference.

West Virginia gave up a solo home run early and the Red Raiders piled on after that for a 4-1 victory in Lubbock, Texas.

The Mountaineers got one run back in the sixth inning when Marques Inman drove home Darius Hill with a single. Texas Tech scored in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

The Mountaineers couldn’t get ahold of Tech pitchers Caleb Killian or Ryan Shetter only putting together three hits total. Outside of Inman’s RBI he also had a double. Hill also doubled for the only WVU baseball hits of the day. Brandon White reached via walk and had his first stolen base of the season.

West Virginia’s offense needs to wake up soon if it hopes to contend against the best teams of the Big 12. Last year, the Mountaineers were stronger as the season went on and that could be the case this season.

After finishing off the series with Texas Tech, the Mountaineers face a light reprieve against UNLV, Penn State and Pitt. That will tune them up for the rest of the Big 12 slate to come over the next several months.

The pitching has been solid enough to keep the WVU baseball team in games and that was the case again on Friday. Alex Manoah started and was roughed up slightly but he managed to stay the course and get out of several jams.

He allowed four runs on six hits over six innings. To last that long shows the faith coach Randy Mazey has in his starters. Manoah has the stamina to last that long on a regular basis. The relievers were strong two with BJ Myers and Christian Young both going two innings and not allowing a hit.

The Mountaineers and Red Raiders close out the series Saturday afternoon. Texas Tech does not come to Morgantown this season so if the teams are to meet again it will be in the Big 12 Tournament.
