The WVU basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season to Texas Tech. Although there were five more Big 12 losses, this one really stung.

The Mountaineers only lost by one point to Texas Tech after leading by as many as 11 points early in the second half. This game appeared to be a blip on the radar as many assumed the WVU basketball team was better than this showing.

However, blowing second-half leads became the unfortunate reality for the Mountaineers. The Texas Tech loss was only the beginning of a frustrating sequence. This was a loss that snapped a 15-game winning streak for the Mountaineers.

Following this loss, the WVU basketball team four of its next five games. But no loss was as close as the one to the Red Raiders. In that game, the Red Raiders shot well from the floor going 58 percent in the second half. As Texas Tech was racking up the buckets, West Virginia went cold only shooting 9 of 27 on field goals in the second half.

More from Hail WV

It was a poor offensive showing and the frustration of the loss boiled over as Wesley Harris of the WVU basketball team was shown punching a Texas Tech fan as the student section stormed the court. Harris only scored eight points in the loss.

Leading the WVU basketball team was Jevon Carter who scored 18 points and Esa Ahmad was just back from his suspension and he scored 18. Carter has scored in the 20s for a lot of his WVU basketball career but as was shown later this season, the Mountaineers seem to fare better when Carter spreads it around.

It’s not always easy to do, but when Carter has at least seven assists, it seems like there’s at least four players on the roster who reach double figures. If that’s the case tonight against the Red Raiders, it should be a victory for the Mountaineers.
