The WVU baseball team won its first game of the season and now has its first Big 12 Player of the Week award winner.

After an outstanding power display in the WVU baseball team’s second weekend of the season, Kevin Brophy was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.

az c , Brophy hit three home runs in a 10-8 win against Illinois on Saturday. This was the second win of the season for the Mountaineers after they opened the season with a 5-4 win against Jacksonville.

Adding to Brophy’s incredible game against Illinois was the eight RBI he tallied, himself. That was fifth-most in WVU baseball history and his three home runs were second-most in team history. Brophy will be a key cog on this year’s team and he can be responsible for getting the program back to the NCAA Tournament again.

His next effort following the three home run outing was the same day, but his lone home run wasn’t enough to get past VCU. Last season, Brophy didn’t hit any home runs which makes his recent tear all the more impressive.

Brophy appeared in 25 games last season but only made five starts. Just one of his starts was at first base and this year it looks like he cemented himself as the starter at first. Even though he didn’t see a ton of experience, Brophy still led the team in on-base percentage with a .440.

West Virginia went 36-26 last year. It was one of the best seasons in school history considering the end result, two wins against Maryland and two losses against Wake Forest in the NCAA Tournament. Also, the strength of the WVU baseball schedule was staggering as the Big 12 is one of the hardest leagues in the country. West Virginia went 12-12 in the conference slate.

The Mountaineers have a ton of potential with some greta players coming back this year and Brophy apparently leading the charge. Even though it was a slow start, the beauty of baseball is that there are so many chances to do better moving forward.
