The WVU basketball team and head coach Bob Huggins may have received an unfair bad rap when it comes to academics.

Senior standout Jevon Carter is one who is bucking the trend of that unfair stereotype. The unquestioned leader of the WVU basketball team is also one of the smartest guys on the team.

His basketball IQ is off the charts and he shows each year that he is one of the smartest students in the classroom, too. According to the Big 12, Carter has been named to the 2017-18 All-Big 12 Academic First Team. This is his third time receiving that distinction.

The rules state that a player will be eligible for this list by maintaining at least a 3.2 grade point average. That is a respectable mark for any college student and for a distinguished basketball player to focus so much on his studies is outstanding.

Jevon Carter will leave the WVU basketball team in a few weeks, so he wants to make these last games count. He also has proven that he wants to make his time as a student-athlete count by giving it his all in everything he does.

Carter wasn’t distracting by the social aspects of being a college student. He also didn’t fall into the trap of Morgantown’s nightlife. He had blinders on to the outside world and did exactly what he came to West Virginia to do. He won games and got good grades.

He will be talked about for a long time in debates about the WVU basketball team. There were some wins left on the table, and Carter realizes that as well. He will also probably realize that there were some As and Bs he missed out on. That, too, will haunt him in the future but he has no reason to hang his head.

Carter has the potential to play professionally, whether it be in the NBA or overseas. He also as potential to succeed in any career path he chooses. According to WVUsports.com, Carter is a sport management major. That career leads to many avenues and with his elite playing background, he has a great combination of skills.
