West Virginia announcer Tony Caridi offered perhaps the best radio call in all of Mountaineer sports history when he said, “Goodbye, Big Blue; Hello, Gold and Blue,” once the WVU basketball team knocked off Kentucky in the Elite Eight.

West Virginia earned a thrilling 73-66 win against the Wildcats in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Mountaineers beat John Calipari and star guard John Wall. For the Mountaineers, Da’Sean Butler led with 18 points and Joe Mazzulla played perhaps the best game of his life with 17 points, three assists and two steals.

The Mountaineers and Wildcats would meet up twice more in recent years in the NCAA Tournament. UK beat the WVU basketball team, 71-63, in 2011 and 78-39, in 2015.
