Dec. 19, 1959

Starting with the 1957 match up, the Mountaineers and Wildcats played three times in a row. The WVU basketball team won the first meeting, as well as the brief series finale. The Mountaineers beat UK, 79-70, in 1959, the season following West Virginia’s appearance in the national championship.

Neither team was ranked, but both squads still featured some all-time great athletes like West Virginia’s Jerry West and Kentucky’s Bennie Coffman. West led all scorers in the game with 33 and Coffman scored 20 for UK.

Also for the WVU basketball team, Lee Patrone scored 21 points and Jim Warren added 16. This was the last time the WVU basketball team would beat Kentucky until 2010.
