WVU basketball: Sloppy women’s team falls to OSU on road
Things are slipping away from the WVU women’s basketball team. Though still in the national rankings, the Mountaineers dropped another game to a solid Big 12 squad.
On Wednesday, the WVU basketball team traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma and fell to Oklahoma State, 79-73. The most telling stat in this loss was the 24 turnovers by the Mountaineers.
Naomi Davenport once again led the offensive attack for the WVU basketball team pouring in 25 points. Tean Muldrow continued to find her scoring stroke and finished with 19 points. Kristina King has emerged as an offensive threat in recent games and she added 12 points.
So, it was a bright night shooting the ball for the WVU basketball team. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers just couldn’t seem to hold onto the ball for extended possessions. All eight players who appeared in the game had a t least one turnovers.

Despite her decent effort, Davenport turned it over five times, herself. Chania Ray, the team’s point guard, also had five turnovers and was unable to lead the offense as well as she usually does. From the turnovers, 14 were steals by Oklahoma State. West Virginia couldn’t enact its defense to the best of its ability, only creating five steals.
Loryn Goodwin of OSU had seven steals, herself. OSU is ranked in the top 25 and is seeing its stock rise in the national spotlight. West Virginia, conversely, is fading away quickly. Both teams have four losses on the year. The WVU basketball team has lost two consecutive games and four of its last six outings.
West Virginia only played eight girls and recorded just five bench points. In order to get back to the team it was in the beginning of the year, the Mountaineers need to find depth and develop secondary talent. The starters may be gassed by the end of a game and it’s not easy to always play at 100 percent with the travel that has to happen in this league.
Next: All-time WVU basketball team
The Mountaineers will remain on the road for another Big 12 game coming up on Saturday. Iowa State hosts the WVU basketball team for the second match up of the season between these two teams. The Mountaineers won at home two weeks ago.
