It was a rough day for WVU basketball programs on Saturday. The women’s team lost to TCU in OT and the men lost on the road to Texas Tech.

The women had a late lead but TCU relentlessly struck back to force overtime. After the extra period, the final score was 76-74 in favor of the Horned Frogs.

Four WVU basketball players reached double figures with Chania Ray and Naomi Davenport both scoring 17 to lead the way. Kristina King recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Teana Muldrow scored 16 points.

The Horned Frogs dominated the inside game and led in rebounding, 49-37. The Horned Frogs scored 40 points in the paint, while the Mountaineers had 29 down low. TCU scored 11 second-chance points and that was helped by 17 offensive rebounds. Three TCU players had double-digit rebounds with Jordan Moore, Amy Okonkwo and Kianna Ray all getting at least 10.

King was the only WVU basketball player with at least 10 rebounds, while Naomi Davenport and Teana Muldrow each had eight boards.

This was a game that the WVU basketball team needed to win. It is slipping further back in the national standings after earlier asserting itself as a consistent top 10 team. Just like on the men’s side the Big 12 is the best conference in the country for women’s basketball.

West Virginia will have a ranked match up later this week with a road trip to play Oklahoma. The Sooners just sneak into the top 25. The Sooners have already lost twice in the conference, to Texas and Oklahoma State. They beat TCU, though, by double-digits.

Oklahoma also lost to the best team in the country in Connecticut. The Sooners gave the Huskies all that they had and only fell by a score of 88-64. Most other teams are lucky to lose by 30.

West Virginia will still be ranked when the next round of polls come out. Still, a signature win is needed to help with postseason positioning.
