2005 Gator Bowl

The WVU football finally got its wish of playing in the 2005 Gator Bowl. This came after stumbling to the finish line of the regular season with losses to Boston College and Pitt. Unlike 2002, the Mountaineers probably should have been in a lesser bowl. The Bobby Bowden-coached Seminoles easily ran up against the Mountaineers.

FSU was No. 17 in the country and with just eight wins, the Mountaineers were unranked. The Seminoles were bigger, faster and stronger than the WVU football team. Leon Washington and Lorenzo Booker both ran for more than 100 yards against the Mountaineers.

The Gator Bowl was always a desirable postseason destination for the WVU football team, though it never really fared well. The Mountaineers had a record of 1-6 in the game with the lone win coming in 2007 against Georgia Tech.
