2002 Continental Tire Bowl

The WVU football team had just finished an upset victory of Pitt to wrap up four-straight wins to end the regular season. With nine wins, a berth in the Gator Bowl looked likely and Mountaineers even posed with toy alligators in the Heinz Field locker room after the game.

Instead, the WVU football team wound up in the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl. The game was a blowout in favor of the Virginia Cavaliers. This was the first meeting between the border rivals since 1985. Virginia owned the game from start to finish.

The WVU football team scored first but allowed 21 points in the second quarter and basically shut down in the second half.
