There are no squads with three losses in the Associated Press or Coaches Poll, so that means the 5-3 WVU football team has dropped from the national rankings.

Following a 50-39 loss to Oklahoma State, nobody expected the WVU football team to stay in the rankings. In fact, there are still some reporters and national coaches who feel the Mountaineers should still be in the top 25.

In the Associated Press poll, the WVU football team is getting 13 votes. In the Coaches poll, the Mountaineers are getting nine votes. South Florida also dropped from the AP poll, while Washington State, Michigan State and Texas A&M dropped from the Coaches poll.

A win against Iowa State next weekend should get the Mountaineers back into the rankings, but more importantly, it keeps their hopes alive for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. Speaking of ISU, it skyrocketed up the rankings and into the national spotlight.

The Cyclones knocked off Oklahoma earlier in the year and beat previously undefeated TCU on Saturday. Iowa State was ranked No. 24 last week but now checks in at No. 14 in the AP poll and No. 16 in the Coaches poll. Other Big 12 teams that are ranked include Oklahoma, TCU and Oklahoma State. So, 40 percent of the conference is ranked in the top 25.

While it would have been so nice for the Mountaineers to get a win against Oklahoma State there is still a lot left to play for this season. But, there is a lot of work to be done also. In his postgame press conference, head coach Dana Holgorsen made a good point about the good teams the Mountaineers have played this season. I just so happens that the WVU football team lost to the three best teams it has played.

Holgorsen said that Virginia Tech, TCU and Oklahoma State are all top 12 team. He added that West Virginia is not a top 12 team. It’s his job to figure out how to make the WVU football team a top 12 team.

The talent seems to be there, but the execution is off in many ways. If Holgorsen truly wants to make a difference, he has to focus on his team’s execution against the really good teams the Mountaineers face each week.
