The Mountaineers came into this game ranked No. 22 although Oklahoma was not ranked. This game was the fourth on a four-game winning streak by the Mountaineers although they would lose the next three and finish the year with a 7-6 record.

In the victory, Wendell Smallwood and Clint Trickett both had excellent games on offense. Smallwood finished with 132 rushing yards on 23 carries, while Trickett completed 21 of 30 passes for 238 yards. He had two touchdown passes and did not throw an interception.

West Virginia jumped out to a 14-0 lead and scored the last 20 points of the game to secure a nice road win.
