The WVU football series against Baylor is still in its infancy, though it has been historically competitive.
The WVU football team owns a 3-2 overall series lead which dates back to 2012. The series between the Mountaineers and Bears started in 2012 when the team from Morgantown joined the Big 12 Conference.
A sun-drenched day in Morgantown, when the Milan Puskar Stadium crowd striped the stadium for the first time, welcomed the Bears and the new conference. The game ended up being one of the most thrilling shootouts in WVU football history.
Since then, the teams have met every year with points being scored at a record pace. This game may not be as anticipated as in previous years, but it still presents and interesting storyline as the Bears are winless. In the past two season, the Baylor football team has not been ranked when facing the Mountaineers. For the first four years of this series, Baylor was about as skilled as any other team in the Big 12.
Because of the scandal that rocked the program within the past few years, Baylor has taken a huge step back. It is up to new head coach Matt Rhule to take this team from the doldrums to respectability. A win against the WVU football team will kickstart that journey.
We’ll see if history repeats itself this weekend. In the meantime, there is a lot to reflect on in this intense series.
