The WVU football team is back in the Associated Press top 25 rankings after beating Kansas on Saturday.

The WVU football team started the year ranked No. 22 but fell after losing to Virginia Tech in the first game of the season. The Mountaineers went into games against East Carolina, Delaware State and Kansas unranked, but will be ranked heading into the team’s bye week.

After having this next weekend off, the Mountaineers will be taking on another ranked opponent in Big 12 foe TCU. The Horned Frogs are undefeated after upsetting a top ten team in Oklahoma State.

TCU went into that road contest ranked No. 16 in the country. Now, the Horned Frogs are a top ten team, themselves, checking in at No. 9 in the latest rankings. Come Oct. 7, it will be one of the highest billed Big 12 matches of the season when the WVU football team travels to take on TCU.

After beating West Virginia to start the season, Virginia Tech has won its next three games and is continuously moving up the rankings. The Hokies come in at No. 12 in both the AP poll and coaches poll. The Mountaineers are No. 23 in both the Associated Press and coaches poll.

It was also announced on Monday that the big game against TCU will be broadcast nationally on FS1.

Since joining the Big 12 in 2012, the WVU football team has played on FS1 numerous times. All but one of the past five seasons the WVU football team has played in the Big 12, it has been ranked in the final poll of the season.

Last year, the Mountaineers checked in at No. 18, ahead of USF and below Colorado. The WVU football team last reached the top ten on Oct. 7, 2012 — its first full month playing in the Big 12 Conference.

There is obviously a long road ahead and a lot of work still left to be done to get back to that point. With Oklahoma State having one conference loss already, the door is open for a team like TCU or West Virginia to make a case for the Big 12 Championship Game.

Even after this highly anticipated contest, more than half of the season still remains. The outcome and production with the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers can be monumental to decide how this season will end up for both teams.

TCU also has a bye week, so both teams will be well-rested for this match up of two of the nation’s elite and ranked teams.
