This was the closest contest in the history of this match up. In front of 50,000 fans at Milan Puskar Stadium, the Mountaineers were in the middle of a seven-game winning streak to start the 1996 season.
West Virginia scored 34 points in both of the first two games of the season in wins over Pitt and Western Michigan. The Mountaineers just had some trouble getting past the next opponent, the Pirates.

The teams were scoreless going into halftime, then traded field goals to start the third quarter. WVU got its touchdown before ECU did when Amos Zereoue caught a short pass from Chad Johnston late in the third quarter.
With just 22 seconds left in the game, ECU got on the board with a touchdown to make the score 10-9. On the road in a hostile crowd, the Pirates got gutsy and went for the two-point conversion. The passing attempt failed and the WVU football team prevailed.
