2004, 56-23 WVU win
In the heart of the Rich Rodriguez era, the Mountaineers were building something special. The 2004 season had high expectations and although the WVU football team did not fully live up to them at the end of the season, the start of the season looked special.
The WVU football team opened up at home against ECU and put up the most points ever in this match up. West Virginia won its first four games of the year and just missed going 5-0 after following on the road to Virginia Tech in somewhat suspect conditions.
WVU also lost its final three games of the year that season, including a defeat to Florida State in the Gator Bowl. WVU couldn’t have gotten out to a hotter start in the season, though. The Pirates couldn’t have even seen this coming.
Kay-Jay Harris introduced himself to the nation with the biggest single-game rushing performance in WVU football history, at the time. He had four touchdowns and 337 total yards.
