1988, 22-10 WVU win

This game garnered 8-percent of the vote, but it was just as important as the above contest. On the road to the WVU football team’s first undefeated season in program history, the Mountaineers had to get past the Hokies.

There were back-to-back rivalry games that season as the Mountaineers took on Pitt on Sept. 24, 1988 the the Hokies on Oct. 1. West Virginia pummeled Pitt and crept into the top 10 of the rankings. A win against the Hokies moved them up even more.

In the game, quarterback legend Major Harris threw for more than 200 yards and Anthony Brown added nearly 200 more on the ground.

West Virginia built a 12-0 lead early and never trailed in the contest. The Mountaineers did enough to win the game, just as they did for the rest of the season. The WVU football team found itself at 11-0 before facing Notre Dame in the national championship.
