The Virginia Tech Hokies are ranked in the top 25 for a reason entering the 2017 football season. The Mountaineers present a more-than formidable test on Sept. 3 to to open a new slate of games.

This is a long anticipated match up and both teams have put together a strong roster for the year. The Mountaineers hope to be a force in the Big 12 Conference, while the Hokies could compete at the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

These two old rivals have had some spirited contests in the past but this will be the first time Virginia Tech and the Mountaineers have met on the football field since 2005, with the Hokies taking a decisive 34-17 victory in Morgantown.

That 2005 team featured players like Eddie Royal, Marcus Vick and Sean Glennon. Some all-time Virginia Tech players include Michael Vick, Andre Davis, Bruce Smith, and DeAngelo Hall, according to Bleacher Report.

The 2017 team has some players who could develop similar legendary status. If the Hokies happen to beat the Mountaineers, these players will be a big reason why that was made possible.

This year’s Hokies have talent all over the field. The following is a list of five players who could cause problems for the Mountaineers in the 52nd edition of the Battle for the Black Diamond Trophy.
