WVU Basketball: Mike Gansey Named D-League Executive of the Year
By Phil Poling
Former WVU basketball standout Mike Gansey was named the NBA Development League Basketball Executive of the Year for the 2016-17 season.
Gansey and his staff led the Canton Charge – the Cleveland Cavaliers D-League team – to a 29-21 record and their sixth consecutive playoff berth. The team shuffled through 19 different players and 18 different starting lineups this year, but still managed to score the 8th-most points in the league (110.1 ppg).
As a college player, Gansey helped carry the ‘Eers to multiple NCAA Tournaments. His combination of passing, 3-point shooting and ability to attack the basket made him a difficult cover for opposing defenses; he also caused fits in WVU’s 1-3-1 press, too.
During his senior season, Gansey shot an incredible 65.8 percent from 2-point range, 42.9 percent from three and 68.6 percent from the charity stripe. He averaged 16.8 points per game – a career high – but also grabbed 5.7 rebounds per game.

Gansey was voted Executive of the Year by his peers after replacing three coaches prior to the 2016-17 season. Of all the players, coaches and staff members under Gansey during his tenure in Canton, 12 of them have received Call-Ups to the NBA.
In 2011-12, Gansey joined the Cleveland Cavaliers as a basketball operations assistant and has since climbed the ranks within the organization. Could this just be the beginning for the former West Virginia sharpshooter?
