The WVU women’s basketball team defeated Elon Friday, 75-62, in the 6/11 match-up of the Bridgeport Region. Sophomore Tynice Martin led the way for West Virginia with 26 points.

Martin’s 26 were a game-high, but also pushed her career total north of the 1,000-point plateau; she’s only a sophomore. She was 7-of-24 from the field, but made three 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws. Katrina Pardee scored 14 in only 23 minutes for the ‘Eers and Lanay Montgomery pitched in 13 and 10 boards.

Head coach Mike Carey received contributions from eight different players Friday. Chania Ray only scored four points in her starter’s role, but filled up the box score with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Teanna Muldrow scored six points, grabbed ten rebounds and dished out four dimes rounding out the stats for the starters.

Alexis Brewer made a three-pointer with her only shot attempt of the game, but added six assists and four rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Kristina King was perfect from the field on her way to six points, while Anja Martin made a brief appearance.

Lauren Brown and Shay Burnett were tough covers for the Mountaineer’s defense all game, though. Burnett was the more-efficient of the two, going 8-for-15 from the field while making 2-of-4 from deep; her 19 points were a team-high. Brown shot 8-of-19 on her way to 17 points, but was only 1-of-5 from three-point range. Elon only shot 39.3 percent from the field as a team (26.7 from three) and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line. West Virginia on the other hand, shot 47.4 percent from the field (47.1 percent from three) and 86.7 from the charity stripe.

The Bridgeport Region of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is played in College Park, Maryland. The Mountaineers next opponent? The No. 3-seed Maryland Terrapins. In their first round game Friday, Maryland set a program-scoring record for a NCAA Tournament game with a 103-61 win over Bucknell. Sunday’s match-up with West Virginia will essentially be a home game for the Terrapins, but that won’t make a difference to Carey’s group. A time for tip-off has yet to be released.
