After an improbable run to the Big 12 Championship, the sixth-seeded WVU women’s basketball team reigned superior Monday night after defeating top-seeded Baylor 77-66.

Tynice Martin led all scorers with 32 points, 12 of which came from the charity stripe. She played a team-high 38 minutes for the Mountaineers as well. Teanna Muldrow scored 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and notched two blocks in her 31 minutes. Lanay Montgomery was three-of-four from the field on her way to six points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Mountaineers enjoyed contributions from eight different players, six of which played at least 16 minutes. The Baylor Bears weren’t afforded the same luxury.

Four players did all the scoring for Baylor while playing at least 34 minutes; Kristy Wallace (40 minutes), Alexis Prince (39), Nina Davis (35) and Kalani Brown (34). Brown paced the No. 1 seed with 19 points, while Wallace scored 17, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists. Prince and Davis each chipped in 15 points, rounding out the scoring for the Bears.

The Mountaineers beat the No. 3-seeded Sooners and No. 2-seeded Longhorns on their way to the Big 12 Championship. That’s quite the gauntlet.

After finishing the regular season 23-10 (8-10 in conference play), the Mountaineers are primed for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. West Virginia hadn’t beaten the Bears all year, losing twice in conference play. All that was forgotten when the conference tournament arrived.

This Mountaineer team seems to rise to the occasion, though. Coming into the Big 12 Championship Game, Baylor had a streak of six consecutive championship wins, eight overall behind coach Kim Mulkey. The 2017 NCAA Selection Show will depict where the Mountaineers will continue this season’s journey. Airing Monday, March 13 at 7 p.m. on ESPN, competition will start the following week.
