West Virginia Football: Mountaineers are a Playoff Sleeper
West Virginia football is shocking the nation with their undefeated record, and their run through the Big 12.
As most would have thought, including myself, West Virginia’s football team wouldn’t be much to talk about this year just as in years past.
However, through the first half of the season, the Mountaineers are really showing that they aren’t a team to take lightly this year. With their run away win against Texas Tech the rest of the Big 12 should be afraid to face the this West Virginia team.
One thing that is really propelling WVU to win is the play of their dominating defense. They are holding teams to field goals and keeping up with their “bend but don’t break” attitude. After beating Tech 48-17, it’s clear this is not just an early-season fluke team.
West Virginia is making a name for themselves as a playoff contender this season, as they are still undefeated, currently the 20th ranked team in the nation, and powering through the conference up to this point of the season. They should move up at least five spots, at a minimum. If they don’t I think there is someone out to get the Mountaineers and keep them from making a name for themselves.
WVU – currently at No. 12 in the AP Poll – truly deserves to be ranked higher than the top 15, probably within the top 10. It’s possible for this team to really make a run at the top four spots in the rankings to set a spot for Morgantown in the College Football Playoff.
They are a team that can blow it out on both sides of the ball and should be catching the eye of everyone in the NCAA. The Big 12 is up for grabs this season, and right now the Mountaineers have the inside track to their first conference title since joining in 2012.
The Mountaineers should shock a lot of people on how they finish the season. I fully believe that they will make the College Football Playoff this season, and make a big run at winning an elusive National Championship.
