WVU football takes chance on Tyron Carrier
Just a few years removed from his playing days, Tyron Carrier will now be leading wide receivers at West Virginia.
WVU head coach Dana Holgrosen hired Carrier, who was a graduate assistant at Baylor, to take over the position formerly held down by Lonnie Galloway.
Galloway left for the same job at Louisville last month.
So, out goes a veteran and in comes a newbie. Holgorsen is certainly taking a chance on Carrier. Carrier, meanwhile, is getting a great opportunity to take over the Mountaineers’ most explosive unit. There is a lot of potential with the receiving corps and Carrier has to be able to get the group to play at their full potential.
His young age, 28, should be a benefit in the fact Carrier can relate to players better than a guy who is further removed from playing the game. Carrier was one of the best receivers in the country when he played at Houston. He played professional in the Canadian Football League for two seasons.

Carrier can not only thank Holgorsen for this job, but also for grooming him into a talented player. Holgorsen coached Carrier at Houston for two seasons. He obviously left a lasting impression on the head coach. That fact should push current football players, at any level, to allow their coaches to do their work. Players these days need to be a sponge of information with their coaches.
Carriers, obviously, showed Holgorsen respect by listening to him. Now, WVU players like Shelton Gibson, Jovon Durante and Daikiel Shorts need to listen to Carrier.
This should be a great opportunity for all involved.
"“I am excited for the opportunity to come to an outstanding school like West Virginia, to work for Coach Holgorsen and be a part of his coaching staff,” Carrier said. “It’s feels like I am home, being with Coach Holgorsen again. He did a lot for me as a player, and I’m looking forward to working with the receivers and learning from him as part of his staff.”"
Not only will Carrier be replacing Galloway as an on-field coach, he will also be replacing Galloway the ace recruiter. Galloway had a warm approach about him and that players bought into that. Carrier will have to establish his own identity as a football coach.
From here on out, he will be known as a Holgorsen disciple. Carrier has a lot to live up to and he is being thrown into the fire right away as West Virginia is in the thick of spring practice.
