WVU basketball anticipates TCU drama in Coliseum
The WVU basketball team handled TCU with relative ease on Jan. 4.
Now, the Horned Frogs invade Morgantown on Saturday with a vengeance, not only for that loss earlier in this season, but from a highly-contested loss from last year.
On Jan. 24, 2015, Jevon Carter sunk a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds left on the clock to give the Mountaineers a hard-fought, 86-85 win over TCU in overtime.
It was contested because TCU’s Kyan Anderson was whistled for a foul on Carter, thus sending him to the line with the chance to win the game. Daxter Miles launched a full-court pass to Carter on the other end who went up for a lay up when the foul occurred.
Horned Frogs head coach Trent Johnson was already irate at the officials, but that final play sent him over the edge.
Johnson rushed the court and berated the officials. He had to be restrained by his players as he continued to shout and point at the referees as they attempted to leave the WVU Coliseum.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers were celebrating. Rightfully so.
"“It’s amazing the freshmen made the play they made at the end of the game,” said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins after that game. “Dax grabbing it quick, Jevon understanding he’s got to run the floor … I mean you can play the game for a long time and not have that kind of acumen to do what those two guys just did.”"
Carter had eight points in that game, while four other WVU players reached double figures.
West Virginia needs to ramp up its offensive attack against the Horned Frogs, this time around.
When the Mountaineers beat TCU by a 95-87 count on Jan. 4, six players reached double figures. Now, the WVU basketball team is coming off a tough-luck loss to Kansas, where the Mountaineers shooting was off in the second half.
A win over the Horned Frogs in front of a sold out, rowdy WVU Coliseum will put the Mountaineers right back in the thick of things in the race for the Big 12 Conference crown.
