Lady Gaga’s mother was a WVU cheerleader
On the heels of her stunning National Anthem performance at the Super Bowl, singer Lady Gaga revealed to the nation that her mother was once a West Virginia cheerleader.
Many WVU fans and Mountaineer diehards already knew this, especially after a 2014 story by the
In that story by Zack Harold, at a concert in Pittsburgh, Lady Gaga gives a shout out to her grandmother. With that, she makes clear mention that she is from West Virginia.
"“My grandma’s here tonight,” Harold recalls in the PopMachine blog. “My grandmother was there with me for one of the hardest times in my life, and she’s been there for every other hard time since that one.“We have been through a lot together because my grandmother’s from West Virgin-i-a. She always told me not to give up. She always told me to be myself.“I would say ‘Grandma this business is so hard, nobody understands me, grandma. ‘She’d say ‘Oh honey, they will.’ I love you, grandma.”"
On Tuesday, via Instagram, Lady Gaga posted a picture of her mother in a WVU cheerleading uniform.
Two days before, she was in San Francisco belting out a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem at Super Bowl 50. Her grandmother, who she lovingly refereed to in that concert speech, was likely watching in her hometown of Glen Dale, W.Va.
Glen Dale is in the northern panhandle of the state, near the birthplace of country singer Brad Paisley.
Lady Gaga’s mother, Cynthia Germanotta, was also a native of Glen Dale. Obviously a WVU cheerleader, she moved to New York City after graduation.
Some celebrities such as Randy Moss and Leonardo DiCaprio have been spotted wearing West Virginia attire over the years.
Now, away from the world of sports and movies, a world-renowned singer has brought the Mountaineers to a high stage.
