Game 2: 2006 vs. Georgia
West Virginia wasn’t just fighting for itself as a huge underdog against No. 8 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2, 2006. The Mountaineers were fighting for the Big East. The conference became a laughingstock around the nation for being a cupcake league.
West Virginia’s 38-35 gutsy victory proved that the Mountaineers could play with anyone in the country, while defending its own Big East pride.
Steve Slaton continued his torrid freshman season with three toucdowns and 204 rushing yards for WVU. But what sealed the deal for the Mountaineers was a fake punt run for a first down late in the fourth quarter by punter Phil Brady.
It was the only time West Virginia has faced the Bulldogs.
