Game 4: 1984 vs. Penn State

Even though the Backyard Brawl with Pitt has been on a hiatus, a once-budding rivalry with Penn State has not been played since 1992. The last win for West Virginia in this series came in 1988, but the most memorable was on Oct. 27, 1984.

PSU outgained the Mountaineers on offense, 345-274, but West Virginia prevailed on the final scoreboard, 17-14.

Speaking of the scoreboard, it read “FINALLY” at Mountaineer Field as the victory ended a 28-year losing streak against Penn State.

In the second half, West Virginia broke a tie with a 49-yard field goal by Paul Woodside. WVU added to the second half lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Pat Randolph. Then, Larry Holley had a fourth quarter interception that preserved the win.
