Game 13: 2002 vs. Virginia Tech
On Nov. 20, 2002, the Mountaineers and head coach Rich Rodriguez made a statement that the entire nation witnessed on a Thursday night in Blacksburg, Va. The unranked Mountaineers went into a notoriously tough place to play and showed up the No. 13 Hokies.
WVU won, 21-18, thanks to a goal line stand led by linebacker Grant Wiley, who went on to become a soap opera actor. The defensive plays continued late in the fourth quarter when Brian King picked off a pass to seal the deal.
Quincy Wilson’s 125-yard performance included a 42-yard touchdown run in the third quarter which propelled the Mountaineers to the finish.
The victory was WVU’s first over a ranked team in nine years.
