Game 16: 1948 vs. Maryland

Maryland led West Virginia in this contest, up until it mattered most. The Mountaineers pulled out a 16-14 win with a touchdown by Jim Devonshire in the waning minutes.

Devonshire also scored WVU’s only other touchdown in the game and Gene Simmons kicked a late field goal. The win on Nov. 27, 1948 gave the Mountaineers an 8-3 record and a berth in the Sun Bowl.

This would be West Virginia’s final win against Maryland for six years. A longtime rival of the Mountaineers, the Terrapins have been pretty evenly matched over the years. West Virginia now holds a 28-22 series advantage.
