Game 18: 1940 vs. Kentucky
Autumn in West Virginia is usually beautiful. That wasn’t the case on Nov. 17, 1940 as the Mountaineers and Kentucky Wildcats battled through a mud pit and snow storm. West Virginia pulled out the 9-7 victory, mostly because the Wildcats’ offense couldn’t get moving in the mud, at all.
West Virginia’s only touchdown came on a short reception by Howard Lewellen, which was set up by a long run by Bill Gardner.
Hank Goodman of the Mountaineers sacked UK quarterback Ermal Allen in the end zone for a safety to win the game.
