West Virginia head baseball coach Randy Mazey will be absent for the Mountaineers next two games due to violating NCAA Baseball Playing Rule 2-26, A.R. 7 (prolonged arguing or unsportsmanlike conduct following an ejection).

Mazey was ejected in the third inning during West Virginia’s 5-0 loss to TCU Sunday afternoon. TCU swept West Virginia in the series.

Mazey will miss West Virginia’s game at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, May 5, and the series opener at Oklahoma State on Friday, May 8.

Assistant coach Derek Matlock will serve as the Mountaineers acting head coach.

“I would like to apologize to our administration, players and fans for my actions on Sunday afternoon in the TCU game,” Mazey said in a release. “We value good sportsmanship, but my emotions got the best of me when I disagreed with the ruling on the field. I look forward to being back with my team on Saturday and I will work hard to make sure that this is not an issue in the future.”

The press release also noted: West Virginia will have no further comment regarding the suspension.
